The 12 astrological houses, explained simply
Signs describe "how" you function. Houses describe "where" it happens: your relationship, your work, your money, your friendships. It is the most concrete part of your birth chart, and often the most neglected.
First: how to find your houses
Houses depend on your exact time of birth. Your rising sign marks the start of house 1, and the 12 houses then slice your chart like a cake. No birth time, no reliable houses: that is why we always ask for it.
A planet landing in a house "activates" that area of your life. Many planets in house 10? Career is a major stage of your existence. Your Venus in house 11? Your love life often runs through your circles of friends.
The 12 houses, one by one
The self
Your visible identity, your body, the way you walk into a room. This is the house of the ascendant, the one that sets the tone of the whole chart.
Resources
Your money, what you own, your material security, and deeper down: your worth in your own eyes.
Communication
The way you speak, learn, write. Siblings, daily commutes, your close environment.
Roots
Your family, your childhood, your home. What you need to feel "at home", literally and figuratively.
Creation
What makes you feel alive: creativity, play, flirtation, pleasure, children. Your capacity to create and to be seen.
The everyday
Your routines, your day-to-day work, your health, your lifestyle. The house of the habits that build you up or wear you down.
The other
Partnership, associations, contracts. What you seek in a partner, and what you project onto them.
Transformation
Deep intimacy, crises, what is shared (body, money, secrets). The house of inner deaths and rebirths.
Meaning
Distant travel, higher studies, philosophy, spirituality. Your quest for "why".
Vocation
Your career, your reputation, your public place. What you build in plain sight, and the mark you want to leave.
Circles
Your friendships, your networks, the causes bigger than you. Collective projects and the future you imagine.
The invisible
Your unconscious, your retreats from the world, what plays out backstage. The most mysterious house, and the most fertile for inner work.
How to read them together
First look at where your Sun, your Moon and your densest cluster of planets sit: these are the main stages of your life. An empty house is not an empty life, just an area that requires less learning in this existence.
Then cross-read: the sign on the cusp of each house colors how you approach that area. A house 7 in Capricorn does not love like a house 7 in Gemini. That precise crossing, sign by sign, house by house, is what makes a reading truly personal. For the full method, start with our birth chart reading guide.
